Reopen a Student's Quiz Attempt
If a student encounters problems while writing a quiz that prevents them from completing it in the time allotted, you can reopen the submitted attempt and provide them more time to keep writing.
Note: Instructors are not required to provide any accommodation for students who experience technical difficulties while writing a quiz. It is each student's responsibility to ensure that the device they use to complete school work is reliable.
Whether or not you choose to allow a student additional time on the quiz is solely at your discretion, based on factors that include whether you believe their report of technical problems, their history of claims of technical problems, and whether or not they proactively informed you of the problem at the time that it happened.
Reopening a Quiz Attempt
- Go to Course Tools -> Quizzes.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the name of the quiz and choose Grade.
- Locate the name(s) of the student(s) for whom you want to reopen the quiz. Check the box beside each name, and then scroll to the top of the list of names and choose Reopen.
- A box will open, asking you to confirm whether you want to reopen the attempt(s).
- Click Reopen Attempt to let the student continue writing.
The system will display the number of minutes that each student had left when they submitted their quiz (rounded up to the nearest whole minute). If you wish, you can enter a number of additional minutes to add to each student's timer.
Once that's done, the student can return to their quiz and resume it, with a reduced timer reflecting their original remaining time plus any extra time you may have granted them.
Notes on timing of reopened attempts
- The student's new timer will not start until they reopen the quiz.
- A student with a reopened attempt is still subject to the Start Date and End Date of the quiz. If you reopen an attempt after the quiz's End Date has passed, you will also need to use Special Access to grant the student an extended End Date.
