A long-requested feature has been added to the eConestoga Quiz tool: the ability to attach a rubric to written questions. Accessing this feature requires instructors to manually activate a new quiz grading interface.

Attaching a Rubric to a Quiz Question

Rubrics can only be attached to Written Response questions. To do so,

  1. Locate the Written Response question you want to edit, either inside a quiz or in your course's Question Library. Click on the question to edit it.
  2. Click Add Rubric, then Add Existing.
  3. Check the box beside the rubric you wish to attach, then click Add.

Note that rubrics must be in the "Published" status before they can be attached to assessments, so if you don't see your rubric listed

  1. Go to Course Tools -> Rubrics.
  2. Click the arrow beside the rubric.
  3. Click Set Status -> Published.

Grading Quiz Questions With a Rubric

Currently, the option to grade with an attached rubric is only available under two conditions:

  • The instructor must grade one student submission at a time, as opposed to grading one question at a time. We hope that the option to access the rubric in the "grade by question" interface will come in a future update, but for now it is only available when grading by user.

To begin grading with the new interface,

  1. Go to Course Tools -> Quizzes.
  2. Click the arrow beside the name of the quiz and choose Grade.
  3. Under the first student's name, click Attempt 1.
  4. The rubric will appear toward the bottom of the question. Click on it to open it.
  5. You can now fill out the rubric as you normally would-- select a box in each row, and apply an override using the pencil on the right if you wish to. Once a box is selected in every row, the rubric's score will be totaled and moved to the quiz score box.

Creating Quiz Rubrics

In most respects, the process to create a rubric for a quiz is exactly the same as it would be for an Assignment or a Discussion. However, there are some differences in how it might be structured, the information it might contain, and some settings that might need to be enabled.

  • Rubrics for shorter written questions might not need as many rows and columns as a rubric for a longer written assignment.
  • Remember that rubrics are visible to students by default. They can navigate to Course Tools -> Rubrics and directly view them, and they will also see the rubric linked within the question when they write the quiz:

This may not be desirable if the rubric contains elements of the correct answer.

If you are creating a rubric for a quiz question, and the rubric will information that you don't want students to see, it's important to hide the rubric. To do that,
    1. Go to Course Tools -> Rubrics.
    2. Click on the name of the rubric to edit it.
    3. Once the rubric finishes loading, scroll all the way to the bottom and click Options.
    4. Choose "Rubric is hidden from students".
    5. Click Close at the bottom.
