A number of security measures are available to prevent student cheating on online quizzes and exams.

Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser is an optional security measure which prevents your students from accessing external information and software, or communicating with other parties, while writing an exam. Instructions for enabling Respondus LockDown Browser can be found in this guide.

Set a Password

A password prevents students outside the classroom from writing the quiz.

  1. Go to Course Tools -> Quizzes.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow beside the title of the quiz and choose Edit.
  3. Open the Restrictions tab.
  4. Scroll down to Optional Advanced Restrictions, and click Expand optional advanced restrictions.
  5. Enter the password you wish to use.
  6. Click Save and Close at the bottom of the screen.

Providing the Password

Once this is set up, the system will prompt each student to enter the password before they can begin writing the quiz. There are two ways that you can provide this password during the exam:

  • Write it on the board in class. This option is much faster, but allows students to text the password to another party outside the class.
  • Keep the password to yourself and type it into every student's computer. If the students never know the password, they can't send it to anyone else. If you plan to handle the password this way, a shorter password (3 or 4 characters) is recommended to allow you to quickly type it into all students' computers at the start of the exam.

Shuffle & Paging

To prevent students from cheating off neighbours' screens when writing in class, you can enable some settings to randomize question order and present a limited number of questions at a time.

  1. Go to Course Tools -> Quizzes.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow beside the title of the quiz and choose Edit.
  3. Under the Quiz Questions heading, type a number into the Questions per page field, then click Apply. Dark bars should appear within the question list below to indicate how the questions will be broken up.
  4. Check the box beside Shuffle questions at the quiz level.
  5. Optionally, check the box beside Prevent moving backwards through pages. This may or may not be desireable depending on whether you want students to be able to go back and change answers; if you do enable the setting, make sure you clearly announce to students before the quiz starts that they will not be able to go back once they move to a new page.
  6. Once you are finished, click Save and Close.

The security settings listed on this page each provide protections against different types of cheating; the more different protections you enable, the fewer the opportunities for dishonest conduct that will be available to students taking your quiz.

If you have any questions about quiz security or the protections described on this page, please do not hesitate to e-mail us at eConestoga@conestogac.on.ca and we will be happy to assist you.
