Respondus Monitor
Respondus Monitor is a remote proctoring service licensed by the college to help ensure academic integrity in online tests, quizzes and exams. It monitors a test taker’s behaviours by recording the learner during the test session, including their webcam, desktop screen and microphone activity. If Respondus Monitor detects unusual movements, it will record a still photo. After the exam, an instructor can review a slideshow of the photos, or watch the full recorded video of the test-taking session. This information may be used as part of an investigation into whether an academic integrity incident may have occurred.
System Requirements
It is important to note that Respondus Monitor has two hardware requirements that must be met by ALL students in your class.
- Each student must be working on a Mac or PC desktop or laptop computer. Phones, tablets, and Chromebooks are not compatible with Respondus Monitor.
- Each student must have a functioning webcam. Most laptop computers have a camera built-in, but students on desktop computers will need to connect an external camera to use Monitor.
If any of your students do not have access to a computer with a webcam, you should not enable Respondus Monitor for your exam, as this will block these students from writing the exam.
Enabling Respondus Monitor
- Go to Course Tools > Quizzes.
- Open the LockDown Browser tab at the top of the screen.
- Note: If this is the first time you're accessing the LockDown Browser tab, you will need to authorize Respondus to access your account information. Only your name and employee e-mail address will be passed to the vendor.
- After the security authorization, you may also see a splash screen with support and reference documents for Respondus; if you don't wish to see this splash screen each time you open the tab, there is a checkbox at the bottom left which will prevent the screen from being displayed in the future.
- You should now see a screen which lists the Quizzes in your course. Click the drop-down arrow beside any quiz' title and choose "Settings".
- On the next screen, under the LockDown Browser Settings heading:
- Select the option to "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam."
- Uncheck the checkbox immediately underneath, labeled "Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results."
- Expand the "Advanced Settings" section, and check the first option, labeled "Lock students into the browser until exam is completed."
- Then, under the Monitor Webcam Settings heading:
- If this is your first time enabling Respondus Monitor, a popup message will appear telling you about Monitor and linking you to online training resources; check the box labeled "Don't show this message again", then click Continue to Respondus Monitor.
- Select the option to "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam."
- Under the Startup Sequence subheading, you can configure the steps your students will need to follow at the start of the quiz. We recommend leaving all options checked.
- Similarly, leave all options under Facial Detection Options checked.
- Once you're done, click Save + Close at the bottom. You will be returned to the quiz listing, and the text "Requires Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam" will have been added to the title of the quiz.
- When you're finished, click Manage Quizzes at the top of the screen to exit the Respondus console.

What Students Will Experience
If all of the recommended settings above are enabled, students will go through the following steps at the start of any Monitor-enabled quiz:
- The student will be provided some technical tips to ensure good recording.
- The student will be asked to pose for a clear photograph.
- The student will be asked to check the recording level of their microphone (if available).
- The student will be asked to hold their ONE Card up to the camera so that it can be photographed.
- The student will be asked to turn their camera back and forth to demonstrate that they are alone in the room.
The best way to understand how this experience works is to try it yourself. Check out the Respondus Monitor-enabled sample quiz available within this course to go through the start-up process on your own computer.
What Instructors Will See
During the exam, students will be monitored by an automated program to ensure that they remain in the room and do not communicate with other students. Instructors do not need to take any action during the exam period to facilitate this.
After the exam is completed, instructors can access the recordings for each student who wrote the exam.
- Go to Course Tools > Quizzes.
- Open the LockDown Browser tab at the top of the screen.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the quiz' title and choose "Class Results".
- The system will report how many students have completed the quiz, and how many students are a high priority for you to review based on abnormalities in their recordings. Note that a high review priority does NOT automatically indicate cheating-- the student may simply have experienced camera problems or other similar technical issues.
- If you expand the [+] icon beside any student's name, you can view the detailed recordings from their test session, including their student photo, student ID, environment scan, and the full video of their test session. Note that the full video may take several hours to appear after the student submits their quiz.
