The Accommodations feature lets you apply a time limit modifier to all of one student's quizzes in the same course. This option can be found on the Classlist screen of your course.

When a student receives an accessibility accommodation from the college, it is common for their accommodation letter to include an extension of the normal time limit on all quizzes. This is usually phrased on the letter as "X minutes per hour". This time limit extension can be applied one-quiz-at-a-time with the Special Access feature, or it can be applied to all quizzes at once using the Accommodation feature.

Note: The bulk Accommodations tool can only apply bulk changes to time limits, and not to any other settings. If the student's accommodation requires them to write on a different day, or to be exempted from Respondus, those settings must still be applied one-quiz-at-a-time using Special Access.

Applying a Bulk Accommodation

To apply an Accommodation to all of a student's quizzes:

    An instructor is on the Classlist tool. They have clicked the arrow beside a student's name, and are hovering over Edit Accommodations
  1. Go to Course Tools -> Classlist.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow beside the student's name and choose Edit Accommodations.
  3. A small window will appear. Check the box to Modify Time Limit, and then choose Multiplier of original quiz time.
  4. The instructor has selected to Modify Time Limit. They can pick a multiplier, or a flat number of extra minutes. They have entered a multiplier of 1.5.
  5. Enter the student's time extension (listed on the student's accommodation letter) as a multiplier. E.g., some common examples might include:
    • 15 minutes per hour -> Enter 1.25
    • 30 minutes per hour -> Enter 1.5
    • 60 minutes per hour -> Enter 2
  6. When you're finished, click Save.
.

If you're successful, you should see a gear-shaped icon near the student's name on the classlist:

The student's name is displayed with the accommodation icon beside it.

How do Accommodations interact with Special Access?

In most cases, if you've applied a bulk Accommodation extension to a student, you should not need to apply Special Access to specific quizzes for them. However, there are some scenarios where this may be useful to do. E.g.,

  • The user missed a quiz, and needs to be allowed to write on a different day.
  • You have decided to grant the student a larger-than-normal extension on a particular quiz.
  • The student's accommodation needs require more complex settings than merely a time limit extension. E.g., they also need to be granted multiple attempts, or exempted from using Respondus.

In these scenarios, you will need to apply Special Access manually to one or more quizzes. If you do, here are some notes about how Special Access and a bulk Accommodation interact with each other:

  • When applying Special Access, you will see the student's Accommodation time limit modifier listed near their name:
  • On the Special Access screen, the instructor sees the accommodation icon and the student's default time limit modifier displayed beside their name.
  • If you configure Special Access for the student, and you don't specify a time limit change, the bulk Accommodation time will apply to the student. The other items you specify in Special Access-- different Start and End Dates, or a different number of Attempts, or an exemption to Respondus-- will also apply as usual.
  • If you do specify a time limit change in Special Access, the Special Access time limit will apply (and not the bulk Accommodation time).
