Upload and Manage Content Files
The Content of your course shell may consist primarily of documents uploaded from your computer. Commonly-uploaded files include:
- Class notes & readings (Word or PDF format). You can use our Word template to get started.
- Lessons, presentation slides sometimes including narrations (PowerPoint format). Feel free to use our PowerPoint template.
- Assignment instructions (Word or PDF format)
- Sample files & assignment templates (any file format used in your class)
Upload a File
There are two workflows you can use to upload files to your Content area; choose whichever you find easier.
Option 1: The "Upload Files" menu
- Open the Content area of your course, and navigate to the Module where you wish to add your file.
- Click Upload/Create -> Upload Files.
- In the window that appears, choose My Computer.
- Click the Upload button.
- A file explorer window will appear. Locate the file(s) on your computer, select them, and then click "Open" or "Upload" at the bottom of the window (the button label varies by browser).
- Click Add to finish uploading the files.
Option 2: Drag & Drop
The Drag & Drop workflow is faster, but you will need to be comfortable arranging and working in multiple windows on your desktop at the same time.
- Open a file folder on your computer.
- On a PC: Press the Windows key + E on your keyboard.
- On a Mac: Click the Finder icon in your dock.
- Navigate to the folder that contains the files you wish to upload.
- Resize the file folder so that it takes up about 1/4 to 1/3 of the width of your screen, and drag it to the far left or far right of your desktop.
- Open your web browser, and log into eConestoga.
- Resize the browser window so that it takes up the remaining space on your screen, and drag it to the other side so that you can see the file folder's contents behind it.
- Open the Content area of your course, and navigate to the Module where you wish to add your file.
- In the file folder window, select the file(s) you wish to upload. You can select multiple files at once by clicking the first file in a set, holding Shift, and then clicking the last file in the set.
- Click and drag the file(s) from the file window into your browser window. Continue holding down your mouse button while you move your cursor into the location where you wish to drop the files. If you are uploading into an empty Module, there should be an area clearly marked with a dotted line for you to drop files into; if the folder already contains files, you will see a dark bar underneath your cursor to indicate where your new files will be dropped into the folder.
- When you're satisfied with the location highlighted under your cursor, release the mouse button to upload the files.
Edit Files & Replace Files
It's important to note that most types of files cannot be edited within eConestoga. Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other types of files created outside of eConestoga will display within the Content area but must be edited on your local computer.
Downloading a Copy of a File to Edit
- Open the Content area of your course, and navigate to the Module where the file resides.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the file's title and choose Download.
- Save the file to your computer's hard drive, in a location where you will be able to find it. If your browser does not explicitly ask you where to save the file, it is likely that your browser saved it to the Downloads library on your computer by default.
Once the file is downloaded, you can open it, make any changes you wish, and then save your changes.
Replacing an Old File with a Newer File
- Open the Content area of your course, and navigate to the Module where the older version of the file resides.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the title of the file, and choose Change File.
- Click the Upload button.
- A file explorer window will appear. Locate the file on your computer, select it, and then click "Open" or "Upload" at the bottom of the window (the button label varies by browser).
- Click Add to finish uploading the file.
The existing file in your course will be replaced with the newer version.
Note that PDF files generally can't be edited at all; you must locate the original file used to create the PDF, edit that, and create a new PDF to replace the old one.
Delete a File
- Open the Content area of your course, and navigate to the Module where the file resides.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the title of the file, and choose Delete Topic.
- A pop-up will appear with two options: "Remove the topic", which is selected by default, and "Permanently delete". Always leave the default option, "Remove the topic", selected. If you choose Permanently Delete, you will not be able to restore the file if you make a mistake or change your mind.
- Click Delete at the bottom to remove the file from the folder.
